I.          NURS 195 – Special Topics – Nursing Leadership Development

II.        Spring Semester 2004

III.       A special topics course that provides academic credit and a supplementary learning opportunity for students to develop leadership skills and to enhance professional socialization through participation in the local chapter Student Nurses’ Association, State Student Nurses’ Association and National Student Nurses' Association (NSNA). 1 Credit hour.

V.        Course Objectives

A.        Develop an understanding of the impact of professional organizations on student achievement.

B.        Develop competencies for future leadership in nursing and public policy.

C.        Set the stage for life-long commitment to participation in professional organizations.

VI.       Course Requirements

A.        Participate as a member of the local Student Nurses’ Association, State Student Nurses’ Association and National Student Nurses’ Associations.

B.        Participate in fundraising efforts of the local chapter.

C.        Participate in community/community health project(s).

D.        Submit a poster for presentation and competition at the state and/or National convention. Specific requirements of the poster to be provided by instructor. Posters will be a group project with a minimum of 2 students and a maximum of 4 students.

E.         Submit application for scholarship.

F.         Submit a written summary of the community health project and how it benefited the community and also include personal benefits toward students’ professional development.

G.        Submit an article/paper for publication in a local, state, or national healthcare or nursing newsletter or journal. Topic subject to approval of instructor.

VIII – Academic Integrity - It is the aim of the faculty of Lincoln Memorial University to foster a spirit of complete honesty and a high standard of integrity.  The attempt of any student to present as his/her own, any work, which he/she has not honestly performed, is regarded by the faculty and administration as a very serious offense and renders the offender liable to severe consequences and possible suspension (LMU Undergraduate Catalog, pg 39).  Any nursing student who participates in cheating or plagiarism will be expelled from the Nursing Leadership Development course and will receive an “F” in the course. 

1.         Cheating:  dishonesty of any kind on examinations or written assignments, unauthorized possession of examination questions, the use of unauthorized notes during an examination, obtaining information during an examination from another student, assisting others to cheat, altering grade records or illegally entering an office are instances of cheating.

            2.         Plagiarism: offering the work of another as one’s own without
           proper
acknowledgement is plagiarism; therefore, any student who
           fails to give credit for
quotations or essentially identical material
           taken from books, magazines,
encyclopedias or other reference
           works, or from themes, reports or other writing of a fellow student has
           committed plagiarism (LMU Undergraduate Catalog, pg 39).

 IX – Disability Statement -Disability Statement:  Any student with a disability requiring accommodation(s) should make an appointment with the Vice-President for Student Affairs (800-325-0900, ext 6393) to discuss specific needs.

1.                  February – Intro Part I, pages 2 – 14. Answer 2 critical thinking questions – Due 2/20.

2.                  March – Chapter 11, pages 173 – 179. Answer 2 critical thinking questions – Due 3/19.

3.                  April – Chapter 4, pages 76 – 85. Answer 2 critical thinking questions – Due 4/9.

 *Critical Thinking Questions to be submitted in online format as a Word attachment, no later than midnight of due date.

 Grading Criteria for Community Health-project summary:

2.                  Typed and follows APA style.

a.       Maximum three (3) typed pages.

b.      Times New Roman or Arial 12 point font.

c.       Submitted via email to instructor by midnight of assigned due date.

3.                  Grammar and spelling must be accurate.

4.                  References must be included and cited in APA format.

5.                  Content

a.       Discuss the purposes of the community health project (why it is important).

b.      Include some background information regarding the health concern (references)

c.       Document your community hours – a minimum of 4 hours.

d.      Evaluate the attributes you developed as a result of this project.

 

Grading Criteria for Publication Assignment

 

1.                  Typed

a.       Minimum one (1) typed page.

b.      Times New Roman or Arial 12 point font (or as directed by publication guidelines)

c.       Submitted via email to instructor by midnight of assigned due date.

2.                  Grammar and spelling must be accurate.

3.                  References used must be included and cited in APA format.

4.                  Content

a.       Topic must be approved by instructor.

b.      Must meet guidelines of selected publication.
