Nursing 416 Independent Study (2 Credits)
Clinical Hours: 80 hours/semester
Class Hours: Meets 4 times during the semester
Course Description
Independent study empowers students to construct their own learning opportunity by knowing and understanding the unique caring of a nursing situation. The students draw upon past lived experiences and discover new meanings. Understandings are nurtured through student relationships with others and mutual sharing that reveals further possibilities.
Learning Outcomes
Learning as Knowledge
This student will:
- Create their own plan of learning in a nursing [leadership & NSNA] situation;
- Use Theoretical perspectives of caring in developing knowledge of the lived experiences of clients (students in professional organizations).
Learning as Process or Behavior
The students will:
- Develop a caring relationship with a preceptor;
- Complete critical analyses of clinical judgments in nursing situations;
- Grow and develop their caring potential within the context of client-student relationships.
Learning as Attitude
The students will:
- Grow in self understanding through reflective journaling;
- Value culturally competent care.
Learning as Understanding
The student will:
- Come to new meanings, understandings, and possibilities in a nursing situation (In leadership and NSNA).
Instructional procedures
Each student will select a nursing situation. In this nursing situation the student will formulate a caring relationship with a preceptor and other colleagues. The student is empowered to construct their own learning through reflection and dialogue with faculty and preceptor.

The grade for Nursing 416 is determined as follows:

Giving Back Project
Option 1: Includes presentation in the clinical setting 40 points
Option 2: Excludes presentation…................……. 20 points
This project provides an opportunity for you to “give back” to your clinical area. Ideas could include use of videos, brochures, research, etc. Criteria for the Giving Back Project will be available the first class day.
Preceptor’s evaluation……………...........80points (and completion of 80 clinical hours)

Journal One Criteria
- Create an ongoing dialog about progress of our own learning (personal goals) in your own nursing situation. Include your goals with the journal. You will need to journal after each clinical experience. Please date your entries. (20 points)
- Discuss the theoretical perspectives of caring and developing knowledge about your nursing situation. Reference these using APA format (include 2 references to your own particular clinical area of growing expertise and 2 references to caring). (6 points)
- Include research mentorship and discuss findings as it pertains to your relationship with your preceptor. (Reference these using APA format. Include at least 3 references). (10 points)
- Reflect on what you are coming to know about yourself and your abilities in the clinical area. (2 points)
- Correct syntax, grammar, APA 4th edition. (2 points)
Journal Two Criteria
- Create an ongoing dialog about the progress of your own learning (personal goals) in your own nursing situation. Include your goals with the journal. You will need to journal after each clinical experience. Please date your entries. (20 points)
- Discuss the development of your relationship with your preceptor and other professionals in the clinical setting. (4 points)
- Complete a critical analysis of clinical judgments you are making in your nursing situations. Cite 4 references that pertain to those clinical judgements. Include references in journal. (8 points).
- Discuss your development of caring relationships with clients in your independent study nursing situation. (2 points)
- Reflect on what you are coming to know about yourself and your abilities in the clinical area. (2 points)
- Reflect on the cultural components of care to selected clients. (2 points)
- Correct syntax, grammar, APA 4th edition. (2 points)
Note: Some of this may need to be adjusted to fit leadership experiences with NSNA)
