NSNA Leadership U Directed Study Course (3 Credit Hours) Designed specifically for Cynthia Kirkpatrick.
Course Summary
The course provides a supplementary learning opportunity for students to develop leadership skills and to enhance professional socialization for academic credit.
Course Objectives
Develop competencies for future leadership in nursing and public policy; set the stage for life-long commitment to participation in professional organizations
Course Content and Role of Student
- Student will author resolution for submission to the NSNA House of Delegates.
- Student will serve term on NSNA Resolutions Committee, GANS Ex-Officio Retired Board Member, and Ex-Officio Consultant to KSU-SNA.
- Student will form and serve on faculty/student committee to evaluate proposed code for approval at 2001 NSNA HOD.
- Student will assist nursing department to incorporate NSNA Student Bill of Rights and other standards for inclusion in student handbook.
- Student will keep journal of activities, thoughts, and experiences that will contribute to future leadership competency.
- Student will review article weekly for submission in journal entry to faculty.
- Student will identify and analyze a current national or state issue concerning the delivery of health care and nursing in a ten page paper (APA format).
- Student will evaluate practicality of total school NSNA membership for KSU.
- Student will participate on the student advisory council.
- Student will present a class for middle school students, ideally a girl scout troop, promoting nursing as a career.
- Student will define career path options and explore professionalizaton of nursing.
- Student will serve as President of class and plan activities of final semester with class.
- Student will write article for submission in GANS newsletter (EKG).
- Student will attend GNA Legislative Luncheon (Jan 25).
- Student will pursue specialty license plate for registered nurses.
- Student will use appropriate resources from library, Internet, and mentors.
- Student will demonstrate understanding of Robert’s Rules of Order.
- Student will balance professional responsibilities and personal life.
Faculty Responsibilities
- Meet with student at least once every two weeks for evaluation of progress
- Evaluate materials submitted and offer guidance on assignments, support a.nd challenge.
- Assign a final grade for course.
